Natural pigments with a focus on local colors—foraged or cultivated from a 100 mile radius is the part of Ms. Pettite’s process. Summer 2018, she grew indigo, persicaria tinctoria in her Placerville garden to use in her paintings and drawings. Other local colors include the mushroom pisolithus arrihizus, black walnuts, elderberry and much more. The integration of materials and process into her imagery is an important to Ms. Pettite’s work—and essential part of being an artist in the 21st century, where concern and action on climate shifts create a richer experience for the artist and hopefully her viewers.
